There is no single universally accepted ideal body weight formula โ different medical and research traditions have produced different equations. This calculator includes the four most widely cited: Devine (developed for pharmacological dosing in the 1970s, now the most referenced), Hamwi (used by dietitians), Robinson (revised Devine with slightly lower estimates for women), and Miller (generally produces the lowest estimates). The calculator shows all four plus a range.
IBW Formulas for 5'9" Male
Devine
166.0 lbs
75.3 kg
Hamwi
172.5 lbs
78.2 kg
Robinson
163.7 lbs
74.2 kg
Miller
158.4 lbs
71.8 kg
These formulas were developed for average body frames and don't account for muscle mass, bone density, or athletic build. A bodybuilder at 5'9" and 200 lbs is not "overweight" โ they simply fall outside the original parameters. Use IBW as a rough reference, not a personal target. BMI and body fat percentage provide a more complete picture of body composition.
There are four commonly used formulas: Devine (1974) โ Male: 50 kg + 2.3 kg per inch over 5 feet; Female: 45.5 kg + 2.3 kg per inch over 5 feet. Hamwi โ Male: 106 lb + 6 lb per inch over 5 feet; Female: 100 lb + 5 lb per inch over 5 feet. No single formula is definitively "correct" โ they produce slightly different results and serve as guidelines, not targets.
Not exactly. IBW formulas were originally developed for medication dosing and clinical purposes, not aesthetic or fitness goals. A healthy weight range (BMI 18.5โ24.9) is usually a broader range than a single IBW number. Body composition โ muscle vs. fat โ matters more than the number on the scale.
People with larger bone structures naturally weigh more at the same height. A small-framed person might be at their ideal weight 10% below the average IBW, while a large-framed person might be at their ideal weight 10% above. Wrist circumference relative to height is one way to estimate frame size.
